Chapter Ten

Instead of saying anything else, Trinity walked into the bedroom and closed the door.

Garrett had to fight the urge to put his fist in something hard, a wall, anything. Instead, he swore under his breath, having to dig really deep to pull it together. Trinity could trigger every one of his alpha male instincts.

She’d never been easy. He’d heard that over and over from Logan, his boss, who he knew had struggled with Trinity more so than Dawn. At the same time, he was well aware of the event that had scarred Trinity so deeply and had her treading so carefully into everything: She’d been kidnapped as a kid by her teacher, and it had completely rocked the community.

Logan had saved her, but she’d never been the same. Garrett had seen it all through school, how everyone had treated her with kid gloves and made excuses for every outburst or meltdown, how she had been allowed to get away with things anyone else would be scolded for. He could give her a minute now, and he knew that was all anyone ever did.

He forced himself to take another second to pull it together. He locked up the front door, looking out the tiny single-pane window and taking in the darkness. He could just make out the heavy snow still coming down.

In the tiny kitchen were an old electric stove, a fridge, and a few old cabinets. Everything about this cabin was small, quaint. He took another second to see it as the hideout that it was as he blew out the candles and stuck the matches on the counter into his pocket. He shoved more wood in the woodstove and closed up the damper, then blew out the rest of the candles in the living room, leaving just the kerosene lamp burning. Then he blew out that too and flicked on the battery-operated lantern.

For a second, he just listened to the silence, hearing the whistle of the wind and the winter storm that had settled in around them. Then he stepped to the closed bedroom door and rested his hand on the knob.

When he opened the door, Trinity had kicked off her boots and was sitting on the edge of the small double bed, near the crib with Skye, his daughter. Her wavy dark hair was long and loose, and she was wearing a sweater and blue jeans. Not a word was said. It was just her and him, and he set the lantern on the small bedside table.

“What are you doing?” She frowned, forming a crease in her brow.

“Not giving you a minute,” he said. “You seem to have a way about you, Trinity. You push people away, and they let you, thinking you just need space. But look what happens when you get it.” He could see the moment her back went up. “Don’t start reading what I’m saying the wrong way.”

He stepped over to the crib and leaned down, seeing his daughter in her sleeper, sucking on a soother, fast asleep, a knit hat covering her soft brown hair.
